Students Create New Media Outlet!!!

Greetings Friends, Colleagues, and Comrades!

As many of you know, I have
the pleasure of serving as the Assistant Director of Student Involvement
& PR at the Nyumburu Cultural Center on the campus of the University of
Maryland. Nyumburu has long been a strong sanctuary of African Culture.
The Nyumburu Cultural Center is dedicated to advancing and augmenting
the academic and the multi-cultural missions of the university by
presenting a forum for the scholarly exchange and artistic engagement of
African Diaspora culture and history. Our many programs are open to the
entire university community and are open to the general public.

One of the exciting new programs that Nyumburu is launching is their
UNITV Media outlet. The UNITV Media Outlet’s emergence springs from the
Nyumburu Leadership Series. www.nyumburuleadershipseries.com

his is a two tiered program (radio & TV), not including the Black
Explosion student newspaper which is also run from Nyumburu. This media
outlet is to primarily provide students a platform to voice their
perspectives on a number of things, as well as to cover, in context,
vastly under-reported news items. Both the Radio and TV aspects of this
project will be internet based with LIVE shows that will be immediately
available (after airing) for free download and dissemination.

The importance of this media project cannot be over emphasized. Giving
students, especially students of color, the opportunity to voice their
perspectives in a mass media/medium format is extremely powerful. They
will have the ability to control and disseminate their own images and
stories on a mass scale. (Less than 4% of all full power TV stations are
owned by minorities and less than 8% of all radio stations are
controlled by minorities.) Because this media project is non-corporate
based, the students will not have any barriers when it comes to the
deeply contextual journalism they seek to provide their
viewers/listeners. One of their many goals is to provide context to a
great number of stories that seldom garner that kind of necessary
attention.

The students that I have the honor to work with on this project have
worked tirelessly to create a quality product (news and information).
They seek the community support from individuals just like you. You can
support them by tuning in to their programs and spreading the word to
all of your friends, family, and colleagues. These students understand
the dire need to provide more voices and perspectives to the already
narrowly framed corporate “mainstream” media system.

The UNITV Radio show even provides an opportunity for people to call in
LIVE and participate. The link for the radio show is:
www.blogtalkradio.com/unitv-radio. The weekly listing for the programs
will be updated each Monday. This will give you the opportunity to check
in LIVE or to listen to the archives for each show.

The link for their TV/video station is: www.youtube.com/UNITVmedia. The
first series of TV/video programs will air in one week’s time. The
students are currently completing the filming of these programs.
