The student body at the University of Maryland at College Park will be
marching today, Thursday November 5, 2009 From the Nyumburu Cultural
Center down the mall to the front steps of the Administration building
to demand:
1. 1) The reinstatement of Dr. Cordell Black as Associate Provost for Equity and
Diversity. Dr. Black has been essential to the development of diversity on campus
over the last thirty years, from helping to integrate Maryland's faculty to
establishing the Nyumburu Cultural Center and the office of LGBT equity. He has been
an invaluable resource to students and faculty of all cultural backgrounds. His
removal and replacement with a part-time worker indicate a weak commitment to
diversity by the administration and the provost's office. Diversity is not a
part-time job. We demand his full reinstatement effective immediately.
2. 2) Public release of all budget and diversity records and documents. Without
a full examination of all budget documents and records concerning minority
recruitment and retention by the full university community, we cannot correctly
weigh the consequences of particular cuts. The only way students can hold their
administrators accountable for making responsible decisions is for us to check the
numbers ourselves. We cannot plan for diversity if we don't know where we're
starting.
3. 3) A moratorium on all further firings and academic “reorganizations” until
students, staff and faculty are given seats at the table. The budget crisis affects
the entire University community and we need to deal with it as a community. Until we
all feel fully represented in the process, cuts will continue to harshly divide the
campus. The attempt to remove Dr. Black proves that the administration can't reflect
the views of the whole University. Only with all parties strongly represented can we
ensure any cuts are made equitably.
This demonstration was planned by a group of students coming from student
organizations including Community Roots, Black Student Union, NAACP, Pan Hellenic
Council, African Students Association, NORML Terps, Sisterhood of Unity and Love,
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, American Indian Student Union, Black Alliance
Network, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc, Pride Alliance, Students for Justice in
Palestine, International Socialist Organization, Student Government Association,
Caribbean Students Association, Alpha Phil Alpha Fraternity Inc, Black Social Action
Committee, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc, Student Power Action Mob, Society of African
American Studies, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc, and Students for a
democratic Society.
